April 3, 2008
My husband and I had been looking into adoption for a while and checking into various adoption companies when we came across Adoption Consultants, Inc.’s web site. We sent over an e-mail asking for more information about Adoption Consultants, Inc.’s programs. After receiving information back, I decided to call over and spoke with Cathy Mantell. Having researched adoption for a while at this point, I had tons of questions and Cathy took her time and answered each and every one of them for me. I was very impressed with her and her knowledge of adoption, and also how her company worked. About a month later, I re-contacted Cathy about contracting on and asked some additional questions. Cathy was very informative and we felt comfortable moving forward and contracting on with her in mid-June, 2007.
Once we had contracted, Cathy helped us with our profile. She had wonderful suggestions in refining it. She was also great about helping us layout our shorter profile for her Adoption Book. When Cathy had not received our profiles by early August, she contacted us to see where we were with in completing our profile and if we needed more help with it. (We were actually just waiting on a friend who was helping us with the design of the profile.) The end of August our profiles were ready and off they went to Cathy. In no time at all Cathy was calling us about possible placement situations, which we chose to pass on, not feeling they were quite right for us. In the beginning of November, Cathy called about a birthmom that did catch our attention. She went over the various factors involved, carefully laying everything out to us. We gave it some thought and decided to have a conference call with the birthmom to see how that went. We felt the call went really well. Cathy called us back after she spoke with the birthmom and told us the birthmom wanted us to adopt her baby! We were so excited!
We expected the process to take some time and couldn’t believe within two months of completing our profile we were already matched with our precious baby boy! We were so surprised that we were matched so quickly! Cathy helped us arrange for a social worker to meet with our birthmom. Because our birthmom was a hardly at home, it was difficult for the social worker to set up an initial meeting, so Cathy got in touch with our birthmom and conferenced her in with the social worker to get their initial meeting set up. Cathy also helped us bring in an adoption attorney to take care of the birth father termination and that went very smoothly. Cathy also helped our birthmom with housing, getting a cell phone and service plan, and kept us up to date with her medicals and how her physician’s visits were going.
Cathy is very careful in making sure whatever help a birthmom needs, she really needs and it goes where it’s suppose to go. Our birthmom was going to stay with a friend, so Cathy contacted the friend (with our birthmom’s okay of course) and verified our birthmom was really going to stay there and how much the rent was. She also drafted up a document for the birthmom and her friend to sign verifying this information. With the cell phone, Cathy researched the various cell phones available to buy, where to buy them and the different phone plans available. She e-mailed over all the information and various links to different web site, and then called us to explain the various options so we were clear on them and not overwhelmed. She also recommended sending our birthmother a grocery card rather than cash to help ensure she would use the funds for their intended use….the buy groceries, which we thought was a really great idea. When there was a problem getting mail to our birthmom, Cathy figured out the problem and helped get it all straightened out and reassured our birthmom we hadn’t forgotten about her, there was just a glitch in the mail with the holidays from Hawaii to the mainland. At one point our birthmom called Cathy late on a Saturday night saying she was having problems with her roommates and wanted to move out. Cathy listened to her and was able to help calm her down and she agreed to stay at the house for the rest of her pregnancy which really helped so we would not have to rush to relocate her just before she was to deliver. Any glitch at all that came up, Cathy was right there to help smooth it out and walk us through it.
We are so grateful for Cathy and her expertise and guidance throughout our entire adoption process. Cathy was always a step ahead in the process and continuously informed us of what could be expected along the way. She was always available to us, even when we had a question on a Sunday night during the busy holiday season. She continued to remain in contact with our birthmom too. The adoption process can be very overwhelming, but Cathy guided us and our birthmom through the entire process, from start to end. Cathy was there from the initial conference with the birthmom, she stayed in contact with us throughout our stay in California and even still follows up with us since our return home to Hawaii.
Hiring the right person to guide you through your adoption process is one of the most important decisions you will need to make when adopting, and we would highly recommend that you have Cathy Mantell by your side. What I also loved about Adoption Consultants, Inc. was that Cathy also keeps in mind that the adoption process can be quite costly, and she gives you recommendations and options to keep costs down wherever possible. She is very passionate about adoption and it shows in everything she does!
