We began our journey with Adoption Consultants, Inc. and Cathy Mantell in January of 2004. I had found Cathy through a friend and was so impressed when I spoke with her on the phone. On Wednesday, April 28, 2004 we received a call from Cathy at around 8:30 in the evening. She told us there was a baby that had been born the day previous in California whose health was in question. Cathy wanted to know if we were interested. After talking it over with each other, we quickly called Cathy back and asked to have our profile presented to the birth parents. Minutes later we received a call back. Cathy said the birth parents loved our letter and wanted us to parent their baby! A little while later we were able to speak to the birth parents on the phone. Immediately we felt comfortable with them, and just "felt" this was right.
Cathy was wonderful! She immediately began helping us with our flight, hotel and car rental arrangements. She kept us updated and informed about absolutely everything! With all of these thoughts twirling around in our heads of making plans and getting to California, we suddenly realized we had just asked Cathy to place our file on a "hold" status, as we had thought we had located a birthmother on our own only days earlier. Because Cathy knew we were open to many different situations, she took the time to call us to check in and see how our adoption plan was going. As God had already planned for, our situation had actually just fallen apart. and we had not yet had the chance to call Cathy to request she start presenting our profile again. It would have been so easy for Cathy to simply bypass our file, if not for her dedication and follow through. God had hand chosen him for us!
We left for California early the following morning. When we arrived in California, Cathy told us the doctors may have been wrong and that Andrew may not have any medical problems at all, but we would not know until the test results came in several days later. We began to pray God's will at that very moment. We would love him, our son, no matter what the outcome. Because of Cathy's wonderful interpersonal skills, both the birth parents and ourselves were kept so well informed throughout. Cathy has a special talent for working with hospital staff too! She met us at the hospital the following morning, and she was even more wonderful in person than over the phone! When she arrived at the hospital, she found us outside the nursery trying to catch a glimpse of Andrew. The nursery staff had asked us to leave, feeling the room was too crowded. Cathy took it upon herself to immediately speak with the staff and not only were we allowed back into the nursery, we were also provided a private room so we could bond with Andrew in private and solitude. Cathy also acted as a witness to the birth parents termination of rights signatures, as well as our acceptance signatures, and made sure Andrew's discharge papers were being timely processed so we could leave the hospital and begin our lives with Andrew! We remained in California for about one week while the necessary legal aspects of the adoption were being taken care of. Cathy continued to call to check on us to see how we were doing, asking if there was anything she could do to help with our stay. She also stayed in contact with Andrew's birth parents. She went way beyond what we had ever expected her to do!
Without Cathy none of the would have ever happened! She truly has an amazing gift for the work she does! Her heart is there with you at every moment, both easy and hard. She is so giving and makes the adoption process such a privilege. The combination of her interpersonal skills and knowledge so impressed us, and we continue to recommend her to our friends and even acquaintances. My sister, in fact, recently adopted through Cathy as well! We are so thankful to Cathy for taking the time and initiative to follow up with us, rather than simply bypassing our file, because none of this would have ever happened and we would not have our precious Andrew! The test results did come back negative and we learned our son Andrew was a normal developing little boy! Praise God! We stand in awe of the beautiful angel we have been blessed with. Cathy continues to this day to remain in contact with our family. With Cathy, this isn't her job, it's her passion!
