Hi! My family and I had to write and tell you about our adoption journey to adopt our third and final baby. When we started pursuing our dream of having 3 children 15 years ago, who would have known all that we would have gone through to get there. Our first two children came to us through private, local adoption at a time when birth parents had little to say in who would parent their children. You waited on an attorney's list and when your name came to the top, the next child would be matched with you. Things have changed since our last adoption 8 years ago. (For the better I might add!)
When Jon and I began seriously pursuing our last adoption about 2 1/2 years ago, I did extensive research on the Internet checking out adoption agencies, facilitators, etc. I initially spoke with Cathy Mantell and was immediately struck by how warm and compassionate she was. She spent over an hour on the phone with me and we connected instantly. I would love to say that I was smart enough to sign with her immediately, but instead we opted to sign with a larger, flashier agency we had also researched online. We were stupid enough to fall for a massive mailing campaign from an agency with big name recognition and loads of money to put out flashy materials. After sending them a LARGE sum of money upfront and being told how QUICKLY we would be matched, we waited and waiting and waited...you guessed it, without ONE phone call! It was not until after they took our money that we found that they had way too many families to match as quickly as they had told us they could. After sitting for 10 months with no calls, I contacted Cathy once again just to chat. She was fantastic, as always, and very sympathetic to our predicament. She never got angry or chastised us for going with someone else rather than with her. After talking with my husband again, we decided to place our faith (and another MUCH SMALLER retainer) with Adoption Consultants, Inc. We have never regretted that decision.
We contracted with Adoption Consultants, Inc. the 1st of December, 2003 and by July 16, 2004 we were matched with the most marvelous birth parents! That's less than 6 months from when we sent in our birthmother letter that Cathy also helped us put together! Cathy guided us every step of the way and constantly checked in to update us and keep us in the loop. We had a few scary moments during the wait time, but Cathy was there to answer our questions and reassure us every time we needed her, day or night. The wait for our birthmother to deliver was not long at all, but every day seemed to go on forever! Our little girl arrived about three weeks early on September 21, 2004. Cathy helped us with travel agencies, recommended places to shop in California for preemie clothes, as our little one was only 5 lbs ll oz when she arrived, and other restaurants and places that we needed to get to as well. She even came to visit and spend some time with us and meet our new daughter! It was really nice to be able to spend some actual time together visiting after all our many and lengthy conversations.
This woman is a marvel who works tirelessly 24/7 to make adoptive parent's dreams a reality. Without her, we would still be waiting for our "top notch" agency to match us with a birthmother! Do not believe the hype of these big time agencies that spend huge dollars advertising for your business. They have the money to do that from all the adoptive couples they have signed up that are still waiting to get the call they were promised! Cathy is honest, hardworking, compassionate, and a real friend to you by the time you have finalized your adoption with her. She will always be a big part of our lives for bringing our sweet angel to us when we were beginning to think it would never happen for us again. Cathy never let us give up hope that we would realize our dream. I know she will do all she can to help make your dream come true as well, just as she did for us! We wished we had signed with her from the start but, as they say, things happen for a reason and had we signed with her earlier on we may not have had beautiful Olivia come into our lives and believe me, the lessens we learned along the way were worth it to see that angelic face every day! We can't recommend Cathy Mantell and Adoption Consultants, Inc. enough! Good luck on your own adoption journey!
