God placed it on our hearts to pray about adoption. We spent the summer praying and reading books about adoption. In the
Fall of 2007 we started researching, including agencies and facilitators on-line. A friend and her sister highly recommended Adoption Consultants, Inc. (and Cathy Mantell), so I decided to call Cathy to learn more about her company’s services, what exactly a home study entails, how much adoption costs, etc. Cathy was wonderful and full of information. She was very warm and friendly and easy to speak with. We could immediately tell what a true heart she has for adoption and for helping birth moms and families.
While we were speaking, Cathy shared with me about a birth mom she was helping who was not yet matched and needed an adoptive family for her baby. The baby was due in just over a month. The fast time table was a bit scary, but we had faith that if this baby was meant to be in our family all the pieces would fall into place. Cathy was also very reassuring and always available to answer our questions and calm our concerns, but she never pressured us into accepting this situation. She let us decide on our own and within our own timeframe whether we felt ready to jump in.
We ended up being matched with the birth mom who was due in just over a month … although 12 short days later the baby was born! Typical Cathy, she called us one weekend evening with the news that our birthmother had just gone into labor, even though she was in the middle of a family gathering for her birthday! Because we had just matched and our birthmom delivered so early, there was still tons that needed to be taken care of. Cathy spent the next several hours late into the night walking us through everything that needed to get done, she helped us facilitate our next day trip to California (from Michigan) to meet our baby boy, she contacted and got a local agency on board that night to meet with our birthmother right away to take care of the necessary legal paperwork, and gave us pointers on calling our birthmom and her mom to reassure them how excited we were about the baby and that we were coming right out! Cathy hung in there with us, leading us by the hand step by step. She put all these tasks into order so we knew what needed to be taken care of first. As Cathy accomplished her tasks, she would call us and update us. She had us call her to update her on our end as well. The hour of the night didn’t matter. Because she was so calm and organized about everything, everything seemed manageable to us. We knew if we were to forget anything, Cathy would be there to remind us and get us back on track and that was a reassuring feeling. Cathy directed us every step of the way, point by point.
After finishing up our home study the next morning I flew out to California, with my husband and our kids meeting me there a few days later. Meeting our son Jason was truly a dream come true. We stayed in the hospital for a week together (as he was treated for possible strep B) and had a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other. Cathy remained in touch with me daily, checking in to see how I and the baby were doing. She continued to closely monitored each and every aspect of our adoption plan as it was occurring. She was also always just a phone call away – always available to answer my questions and guide me through the somewhat confusing journey that is adoption. She gave us her #800 number and told us to call her at any hour if we needed her. Her dedication to her work is remarkable and truly inspiring.
Our adoption journey was definitely a journey of faith – we so feel that God placed Jason in our family, and our eyes were opened to countless affirming signs from God along the way. Cathy was such an instrumental part of our journey – always encouraging, always guiding, always supportive, and always available (even during a family gathering!). We would strongly encourage anyone interesting in pursuing an adoption to use Adoption Consultants, Inc. and Cathy. They will be in good and knowledgeable hands throughout their journey. We honestly can’t say enough good things about Cathy, her company and the work she does, not to mention how good she is at what she does!
